Karan Johar rumored to have drawn plans for a Student of the Year franchise

Karan Johar’s Student of the Year film is all that has been on the minds of his fans, particularly the younger audiences including teenagers, who were left overwhelmed with the film and its fresh and trendy new cast. The film starred Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, all of who made their debut with Karan’s fifth directorial venture. The film was a blockbuster and gave the box office a heyday after its release on the 19th of October, 2012.Karan Johar

As expected, the excitement of the film hasn’t died down for its producer-director, Karan Johar. The Dharma Productions chief plans to turn the campus romance into a full-fledged franchise, rolling out yet another film centered on the same competition, with more newcomers and a twist in the story. “The concept of the school competition, which the movie revolves around, will remain the same, but the challenges, the characters and the story will change with each film. Karan also plans to launch new faces with every installment of the franchise. The response that SOTY got was encouraging,” says an insider.

The Student of the Year franchise, if launched as planned, could very well turn into a fantastic platform to bring new talent to the big-screen. The upcoming movie could very well be a fantastic way to introduce newcomers, who usually find it hard to make it big at the time of their launch. Also, given the fact that the films will be productions by one of the biggest filmmaking houses in the country, this could very well turn into a feasible plan! “The second version of SOTY, if all goes well, should release by next year,” says the source, adding, “He’s open to letting directors come on board too. He has already laid the foundation by directing the first film.”

“Karan put in a lot of faith in all of us,” says SOTY star, Alia Bhatt

“Getting love from fans and their appreciation, nonetheless, brings a different kind of a feeling in the actor within me. All I know is that I will have to not take this success lightly but try to put in all my sincere efforts in the right directions, in order maintain this success hereafter”, says newcomer Alia Bhatt who has recently made her big-screen debut with the film Student of the Year. Starring alongside Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan in the lead, the 19-year-old has left the audiences impressed and awestruck with her look in the film and her performance as a campus sweetheart.

Alia Bhatt

Dazzling Alia Bhatt praises Karan Johar

“I’d never imagined that I’d get to do my first film with Karan Johar-it was a big deal for me! And even though he didn’t have a big name in his movie, he never compromised on the film…he went all out and made it like he would make it with other stars. Karan puts in a lot of faith in all of us and that made us feel confident about ourselves”, says Alia Bhatt, praising her director-mentor Karan Johar.

The young actor plays the role of Shanaya Singhania in the film while Varun Dhawan plays her boyfriend, Rohan Nanda. Siddharth Malhotra plays the new kid at school, Abhimanyu Singh, who manages to gain Shanaya’s attention and affections, causing a love triangle. Unlike her on-screen character however, Alia isn’t the typical spoiled brat with a filmy background. “I’ll be kicked out of the house if I expect any celebrity treatment. I’m not a celebrity at all. I’m just an actor and performer. A celebrity and a star is what the audience makes you. At home, I’m just the youngest person in this house, and that’s what I’m treated like.”

Alia Bhatt will next be seen in the film adaptation of author Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller, 2 States and will star opposite actor Arjun Kapoor.

He said that you concentrate on being an actor and audience would do the rest to make you a star. My goal is to be an actor for my own and also audience satisfaction. Hopefully both of us would be entertained.”

Varun Dhawan speaks about his journey to the big-screen

Finding a sure-footed way forward in an industry like Bollywood isn’t all that easy, particularly for a newcomer. Despite being from a deeply-rooted Bollywood background, newcomer Varun Dhawan has had his times of difficulty finding his way to the big screen. The young actor is the son of the veteran filmmaker David Dhawan and the brother of Rohit Dhawan, also a director. Making his debut alongside newcomers Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatvarun dhawan t in Karan Johar’s recent directorial venture titled Student of the Year; Varun seems to have carved a mark for himself in the world of films with his very first movie!

Being the son of a reputed director hasn’t made things easier for Varun however, with the young actor proving himself to be truly talented without the influence of others around him to support his career. “There is no point in complaining as other people go through other things,” said Varun. “This is my journey. Being anyone’s son or daughter doesn’t help you much beyond a point, as that can only get you an entry. It is like goodwill. But eventually we have to work for ourselves and prove it.”

Recently, Varun Dhawan has faced the wrath of link-ups and has been rumored to be dating his co-star Alia Bhatt. While both the youngsters have denied these dating rumors, Varun has also been linked with actress Taapsee Pannu, who will be starring in David Dhawan’s next. None of these dating rumors are true of course and the young actors are busy working on a long and fulfilling career.

Student of the Year, Varun Dhawan’s debut alongside Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra released on the 19th of October, 2012.

“I am trying to get that routine back in life,” says Karan Johar’s protégé, Varun Dhawan

“As recent as yesterday my parents shouted at me. When they do that, it pretty much means that everything is normal,” says newcomer Varun Dhawan who made his debut in Karan Johar’s campus romance, Student of the Year. The actor is the son of the veteran director David Dhawan and starred in the lead of Karan Johar’s fifth directorial venture alongside Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. The young actor is currently preparing for his next film, Main Tera Hero, to be directed by his father. Varun Dhawan

“People say that star should behave like this or like that. Well, I can’t do that and am best suited to behave normal. That’s what works for me. It is just that I have become a little busier and have not been able to meet friends. First I used to meet them on a daily basis but ab utna nahi ho paata hai. I am trying to get that routine back in life,” says Varun. The youngster’s life has indeed been subjected to a transition after his glorious debut though Varun hasn’t found it difficult to cope with fame and stardom. ‘Overall though things have changed post Student of the Year but not so drastically,” added Varun.

In his debut film, Varun is seen playing the role of Rohan Nanda, the son of a business tycoon. The character is portrayed to be dating Shanaya Singhania, the prettiest girl at school played by Alia Bhatt. Rohan is pushed out of the spotlight when a middle-class boy, Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra), joins school on a sports scholarship. Dating-woes are brought to the forefront and a love-triangle ensues as Shanaya finds herself falling for Abhi, much to the displeasure of her boyfriend, Rohan!

The film highlights teenage relationships and the spirit of competition and is certainly one of Karan Johar’s finest!

Karan Johar to launch more talent with his future projects

Karan Johar has brought to the big screen three newcomers, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. Together, the three have grabbed a lot of attention and have enjoyed a dream debut to say the least. The film Student of the Year has been proclaimed a blockbuster and has given the box office a hay day. After the success of his first film with newcomers in the lead, Karan Johar is now planning to rope in first-timers once again! On previous account the director has included Bollywood bigwigs for lead roles in his films that include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) and My Name Is Khan (

2010). The film Student of the Year was Karan’s first without his close friend Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.

And it isn’t just this trio who Karan Johar has launched. The director has also introduced several debutant directors under his Dharma Productions banner including Karan Malhotra (Agneepath; 2012), Punit Malhotra (I Hate Luv Storys; 2010), Ayan Mukerji (Wake Up Sid; 2009) and Siddharth Malhotra (We Are Family; 2010). “With Dharma Productions, I’ve launched more than 11 filmmakers and now I’m starting to launch new acting talent,” articulated Karan.

As for his debutant actors, Siddharth, Varun and Alia, the three are now doing exceptionally well and have been offered films after their successful first-time appearance. “They have already been offered films, and very soon, I will announce them. It’s wonderful that they have been accepted, not only by the media, but also by the audience,” added Karan Johar, speaking about his debutant trio.

Karan Johar’ Student of the Year, a charming coming-of-age tale of romance

Frankly speaking, Karan Johar’s Student of the Year has managed to grab the imagination of the audiences. Unlike his previous films, all of which have had star-filled casts, Karan Johar’s Student of the Year stars three newcomers in the lead. For the film, the director roped in model-turned-actor Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan (director David Dhawan’s son) and Alia Bhatt (director Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter).

In this coming-of-age film, Sidharth Malhotra plays the role of the righteous and independent Abhimanyu Singh. A state-level runner and a brilliant student, Abhimanyu is competitive and a natural leader. Hailing from a Delhi-based middle class family, Abhimanyu seeks to fund his own education and is enrolled at the esteemed St. Theresa’s High School in Dehradun on a scholarship. At the school, Abhimanyu meets Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan), the son of a business tycoon. Arrogant and proud, Rohan locks horns with Abhimanyu. As the movie proceeds, Abhimanyu and Rohan wind up being the best of friends. To add to the mix, Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt) steps into the plot. Shanaya is Rohan’s childhood sweetheart and a girl who hates to be put down. Despite Rohan being her boyfriend, Shanaya begins to grab Abhimanyu’s attention.

With the announcement of the Student of the Year competition, the film’s three protagonists are faced with competition, envy, triumph, failure, manipulation and heartbreak. Each of them then begin competing against each other to win the prestigious title.

Complete with lots of school-campus footage and dance and song routines synonymous with all of Karan Johar’s films, Student of the Year brings to light the dilemmas of teenage relationships. An extravaganza unlike any other, the film is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.

Varun Dhawan wishes to star in a darker role post Student of the Year!

Varun Dhawan has charmed the audiences with his exceptionally eye-catching performance in his debut film, Student of the Year. Directed by Karan Johar, the film is a campus romance that stars Varun alongside Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. Together, the three have made their big-screen debuts with this recent release. And as is the case with most newcomers who manage to impress with their first big-screen performances, Varun is being offered several projects for the future.

The young actor hasn’t however confirmed being roped in for any of these as of now. Previously, rumors of him starring in a film directed by his father, the veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, sparked off after Dhawan senior mentioned his wish of having his son in a picture directed by him. Quoting David Dhawan, “Every father wants to see his son’s film do well, and people are talking about it. I will also make a movie with him, but not just now. Let me finish Chashme Baddoor (his take on the 1981 film) first. I must concentrate on that. I have not used any of the songs from the original film in it.”

More recently, Varun’s intentions of starring in a slightly darker role have made headlines. And we certainly aren’t worried about the young actor not being able to pull off a role as such exceptionally well. Given the fact that his character in Student of the Year did have shades of grey, we’re sure Varun will manage a slightly darker character.

In Student of the Year, Varun’s character, Rohan Nanda, is the son of a wealthy business tycoon. Dating the campus sweetheart, Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt), Rohan rules the school corridors until he meets his match, Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra). Unlike Rohan, Abhi is a middle-class boy who manages to charm is way around the campus and grabs the limelight.

Karan Johar’s Student of the Year also includes Rishi Kapoor playing the gay school dean named Yogendra Vasisht and actor Boman Irani’s son Kayoze making his Bollywood debut.

Siddharth Malhotra rises to the top with his debut in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year

Stardom certainly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Newcomer Siddharth Malhotra however seems to be handling it all pretty well! Coming from a background with no influence in the world of movies, this young actor has ventured out alone. Making his debut in Karan Johar’s fifth directorial venture titled Student of the Year, Siddharth stars alongside Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead.

For Siddharth Malhotra, his journey to the big-screen was nothing short of a fairy-tale! The actor began his life as a model, walking the ramp for some of the most influential designers including Manish Arora, Manish Malhotra and Rohit Bal. And that’s not all. He also gained recognition after winning the Gladrags Face of the Year 2009 award and the NDTV Model of the Year 2010. After being offered an audition for a movie, Siddharth moved to Mumbai. The film however failed to take off and Siddharth ended up working as an assistant director to Karan Johar for the film My Name Is Khan. “He somehow met someone at Dharma Productions and got the job of a trainee assistant director (AD) on My Name Is Khan. My Name Is Khan was an expansive shoot, but he lasted all through and was one of the finest ADs of the film”, said Karan Johar previously.

Siddharth’s career picked up shortly after, with Karan Johar handpicking him for the role of Abhimanyu Singh aka Abhi in the film Student of the Year. In the recent release, Siddharth’s character Abhi is an athletic and ambitious boy who hails from a middle-class school. His destiny begins to change after he enrolls at a prestigious school on a scholarship. Here, he meets Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt) and befriends her boyfriend Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan). A love triangle ensues between them and is pushed to the edge when the three compete against each-other to win the Student of the Year trophy organized by the school’s gay and eccentrically meticulous dean, Yogendra Vasisht (Rishi Kapoor).
